Academician, modern-Greek specialist, translator. Born in Quebec in 1940, he studied Classics at Laval University in Quebec and Modern Greek Literature at the University of Athens. He supported his doctoral thesis on Georgios Tertsetis at the University of Thessaloniki. He served as professor of ancient and modern Greek at the University of Montreal, and chairs the University’s Center for Neohellenic Studies. Member of the Academy of Arts and Humanities of the Royal Society of Canada. His research interests centre on the Early Greek Enlightenment, the Greco-Rumanian relations in the 18th century, Greek surrealism and literary translations. The writers and poets he has translated include Nicholas Mavrocordato, C. P. Cavafy, Andreas Embiricos, Nikos Engonopoulos, Miltos Sachtouris, Hector Kaknavatos, Pavlos Matesis, Margarita Karapanou, Zyranna Zateli, Nikos Kachtitsis, et al. He has taught and lectured at numerous universities including the Sorbonne, Harvard, University of Athens and La Sapienza in Rome. His honours include the Hellenic Republic’s Golden Cross of the Legion of Honour (2005). He collaborated with ANALOGIO 2016 in the production of Nicholas Mavrocordato’s novel The leisure hours of Philotheos, as part of the tribute to the Greek Enlightenment. The text was translated by historian Dionysis Chatzopoulos, and the play was directed by Sissy Papathanassiou and Spyros Vrachoritis. The novel, with annotations and an introduction by Jacques Bouchard, was published in 2017 by the Municipality of Filothei-Psychiko and the St George Church of Neo Psychiko.
