Poet. Born in 1863, he died on his birthday (April 29) in 1933 in Alexandria, Egypt, the city where he spent most of his life. Born to a family of merchants who had fallen on hard times, as a youth he wished to go into journalism and politics but gave it up; at 29 he was hired \u2013and served for thirty years, till 1922\u2013 as an employee in an office \u201cattached to the Egyptian Ministry of Public Works\u201d. He left behind a poetic archive neatly compiled with an exemplary employee’s care, ready for the researchers of his oeuvre. If there is one striking element in the poet’s life, it is his total devotion to his work. This devotion is reflected in his idiosyncratic approach to publishing: although he published regularly, he never issued a book but printed his poems in single sheets and compiled them into impromptu “collections” which he presented to friends and acquaintances or sent to those who requested to know his work. The official corpus of 154 Cavafy poems was first printed in 1935. The literary vindication of his work came with the two-volume edition of Ikaros in 1963. Greek readers were acquainted with Cavafy through the historic review by Gr. Xenopoulos in the journal Panathinaea, in 1903. The poet was first introduced to the English-speaking world in 1919 through his frend, the novelist E. M. Forster. Cavafy’s work is now internationally acclaimed. ANALOGIO presented a performance of Cavafy poems at the Sarajevo Museum of Modern Art as part of the events for \u201cGreece, Guest of Honour, 2014\u201d. <\/p>\n\n
