Reality offers them nothing but misery. A deus ex machina \u2014in this case, a young schoolteacher at the beginning of her career, who arrives in the village for her first appointment\u2014, determined not to fall into the despair imposed by her new surroundings, begins to invent, imagine and generously dispense the illusion that everyone longs for.
