The play<\/strong> (a work in progress<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n

On a terrace in Athens with a view to the Acropolis, a group of friends, some of whom are also lovers, gather to celebrate the new life of their foreign friends, who have just purchased a house in Greece with a golden visa. They all have a common passion: disasters and the conspiracies that surround them. This obsession with disasters and the struggles of our times as well as the hunt for root causes in a society in decline, a world that insists on embracing paranoia and a lack of rational thinking, gives birth to a timely question: Why do we live like this and not in some other way? <\/p>\n\n

Excerpt from the play<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

– The ancients worshipped the erotic drive. Do you know what a Herm is? Have you ever seen one? They\u2019re long narrow columns, sculpted on both sides with the head of the god Hermes and further down, male genitalia protrude from the marble.<\/p>\n\n

– Yes, I\u2019ve seen them. They\u2019re very strange.<\/p>\n\n

– They were placed at various points in Ancient Greece as road markers, as symbols of real estate boundaries. Before they started taking this shape, they were massive phalluses carved out of stone and placed erect at various locations in the cities.<\/p>\n\n

– Amazing.<\/p>\n\n

– The ancients worshipped the erotic drive. That\u2019s no longer the case.<\/p>\n\n

– You mean they adored the male erotic drive.<\/p>\n\n

– What do we worship nowadays?<\/p>\n\n

-Money.<\/p>\n\n

– Our screens.<\/p>\n\n

– Vacations.<\/p>\n\n

– Disasters.<\/p>\n\n

Elena Penga<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Elena Penga is an award-winning playwright, author and stage director. Her collection of short stories Tight belts and other skin<\/em> (Agra Publications) was awarded the 2012 Kostas Ouranis prize by the Academy of Athens. Her plays have been extensively staged, including by the National Theatre of Greece, the NTNG, the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, but also by theatres in other countries.<\/p>\n\n

The first volume of her Collected Works<\/em> for Theatre has been published by Aigokeros Books, and other works were published by Kappa Publications. Her oeuvre includes an Italian translation published by ETP Books in Viaggio<\/em> <\/em>nel<\/em> <\/em>teatro<\/em> <\/em>greco<\/em> <\/em>contemporaneo<\/em>, published by ETP Books (2019), a French translation in Auteurs <\/em> <\/em>Dramatiqes<\/em> <\/em>Grecs<\/em> <\/em>d<\/em>\u2019 <\/em>aujourd<\/em>\u2019 <\/em>hui<\/em> (Narcisse), published by Editions Theatrales, Les Cahiers de la Maison Antoine Vitez, France (2014), a Dutch translation in Europese<\/em> <\/em>Eenaktars<\/em> (When the<\/em> gogo<\/em> <\/em>dancers<\/em>), International Theatre & Film Books (2005).<\/p>\n\n
