Revolution?

Rewriting Αncient Myths Today

21 – 28 September 2021 ATHENS

Tuesday 21 September 2021

20:00 GREECE Sakis Serefas HANDS

Directed and performed by Dimitris Piatas

An orthopedic surgeon who is about to retire, delivers a farewell lecture on the subject “Preventing Upper Extremity Injuries”. As the lecture progresses, there’s a change in the speaker’s demeanor and deviations from his prepared text: he increasingly makes references to the Greek Revolution of 1821 and the hands of unknown fighters. As this farewell speech climaxes towards delirious words and gestures, we begin to realize that behind all this might be a personal story – a story that perhaps concerns us all.

21:00 GREECE Natalia Katsou WIRELESS CONNECTION

Directed by Sofia Dermitzaki

Video: Maria Papadaki

Director’s Assistant: Kalianna Gigourtsi

Performers: Spyros Asimenios, Maria Georgopoulou, Elias Gkogianos, Evangelia Kapogianni, Maria Branidou, Zacharoula Oikonomou, Dimosthenis Filippas

Six characters walk on different paths. Six strangers, confined in their homes, in search of revolution will meet in the most improbable setting: we’re in the present, yet this present revisits Greece of 1821. In a new video game, avatars are given famous and familiar names: Miaoulis, Bouboulina, Androutsos. These avatars wear jeans and sneakers. Our heroes facing their fears, they get to know each other engaging in an on screen adventure that pushes them to their limits. What we think we know may not be true. Time flows on its own accord. And since all revolutions have already taken place, and every move measures itself against the ones who came before, the hardest battles we’ll ever fight are those with ourselves. After all, how can one speak about heroes today? Perhaps via a wireless connection and by rewriting of history.

20:00 REPUBLIC OF NORTH MACEDONIA Eva Kamcevska A WEDDING TO REMEMBER

Translated by Smaro Kotsia

Directed by: Giannis Laspias (Square Theatre Company)

Performers: Antonis Antonakos, Diamantis Karanastastis, Anta Kougia, Daphne Manousou, Dimitris Mavros, Nikos Mellos, Stella Bourou, Virginia Tabaropoulou

During a luxurious wedding reception for the Prime Minister’s daughter, a furious –and ravenous –mob of protestors burst into the ballroom with severe cannibalistic intentions. Trying to flee, the Prime Minister is captured by the horde that ultimately devours him. After a few years pass, however, when this same mob will be called to elections, the scene is set for a repeat of the same mistakes. What is happening in a society that seems to have the memory of a goldfish? This is a theatrical piece with splatter elements and a surreal atmosphere, full of dark humor.

21:00 GREECE Stella Rapti GREEK O’CLOCK

Directed by Aspa Tombouli (Opseis)

Set and Costumes Design: Maria Karathanou

Music & Sound Design: Dimitris Iatropoulos

Director’s Assistant: Miranda Zisimopoulou

After their deposition from the Greek throne in 1862, Otto and Amalia reside in the royal palace of Bamberg, Bavaria. Between 18:00 and 20:00 every day, it is ‘Greek O’Clock’. During these hours Otto and Amalia wear their traditional Greek clothes again; they remember the Greek language; and, with the help of their courtiers, they revisit moments and events that marked their life in Greece. A play of ‘theater within theater”, with a leap in time by the end, will artfully reflect the echo of the past in our very present.

20:00 GREECE Panagiotis Mentis GLORIUS DESTITUTION

Directed by Roumpini Moschohoriti

Performer: Despina Sarafidou

Music Composition: Theodor Lebesis

Manto Mavrogenous, a young woman born in Trieste and raised by a prominent Greek family from Fanari, fights her own battle. As an independent woman, sacrificing everything for the freedom of her land and the love of her life, demands to be respected. Unfortunately, she only tastes the treachery and ungratefulness of others, as a result of her involvement in the political scene of her time.

21:00 GREECE Leandros Polenakis THE PRICE OF ALI PASHA

Light Design: Vasiliki Gogou

Performers: Linos Arsenis, Anastasia Malandrenioti, Pashalis Mermigkakis, Alexandros Perros, Konstantinos Tsiakos, Dimitris Frangkioglou, Sokratis Kotsores (Shadow theatre)

Leandros Polenakis ingeniously and vividly mocks the ‘price’ and exploits of Ali Pasha, subtly castigating the financial hardships and political upheaval that many Greeks are experiencing today, all the while paying tribute to the memory of Andreas Andreadis, a Professor of Financial History at the University of Athens and to Giannis Mourelatos, the shadow puppet player of Karagiozis.

Translated by Leandros Polenakis

Directed by: Dimos Avdeliodis

Performer: Kerasia Samara

VENUE: National Theatre of Greece, International Conference of Ancient Drama “The meaning of Moral Duty in Ancient Greek Theatre”

Laura Derpic Burgos imaginatively subverts the myth of Odysseus’ return to Ithaca and to his faithful wife, Penelope, who in the play is depicted as a mature, troubled and unpredictable woman, whose psyche is transformed, with the passing of time and the silence, the solitude, the agony of waiting and the hope, to a symbol of Courage and Freedom.

20:00 GREECE Sofia Kalogeraki THE COMPASS

Directed by: Enke Fezollari

Costumes: Giorgos Lyntzeris

Performers: Diamantis Karanastasis, Angeliki Karistinou

Singing on stage: Sofia Papazoglou

Here are two iconic figures: one of which, Manto Mavrogenous, is real. Among the brave fighters of the Greek Revolution of 1821, Mavrogenous was a courageous woman, fighting for her beliefs, against all forms of power. The other figure comes from mythology, the amazing Titan and demigod Prometheus, one of the oldest references in the act of revolution. The play finds them conversing, with their imaginary dialogue attempting to become a compass to the life of the modern man.

Odysseas Androutsos was born in Ithaca. Odysseas (Odysseus) of Homer arrived in Ithaca late; therefore he could not prevent the brutal torture and murder of Androutsos, the night of June 5, 1825, in front of the temple of the Goddess Athena Nike. Why was he imprisoned, did he indeed betray the Revolution, who are responsible for his death, are questions that will not be answered in this show. At the moment of his death, however, at the very moment of his strangulation, a thread, that intertwines time and space, is woven, thus raveling the web of the historical memory with frays and truths that stem from the Myth.

Once the dog and his master came back from their daily walk, a strange thing happened. 21:00 GREECE Manos Karatzogiannis GUARDIAN OF A REVOLUTION

Our collective memory of the Greek revolution of 1821 was formed by historians and writers such as Giannis Vlachogiannis. Greece emerges through his texts as a source of nostalgia or as some large historical canvas, bringing to life figures and events of another era. Vlachogiannis’ work, above all, highlights the value of education as a key component of every democratic state.

21:00 HUNGARY Bruno Schultz AUGUST

Directed by Zoltán Balázs

Creative Producer: Sylvia Huszár

Production Manager: Katalin Balázs

Performers: Brigitta Dőry, Brigitta Erőss, Róbert Fekete, Simon Jáger, Andrea Lukács, Gáspár Mesés, Lilla Zsenák

Venue: Stathmos Theatre

The performance takes place with the support of National Cultural Fund of Hungary.

“August”, directed by Zoltán Balázs, derives from Schulz’s metaphysics and elements of his philosophy. It was converted from the imagination and creative feelings of mankind into non verbalism. The performance is based on the mathematically precise formulae of movements. The acting is built on movements, gestures and looks and it leads the audience towards a new dimension, comprising elements of the past and present in a world full of nostalgia. The performance, instinctive and dynamic, sometimes a ritual, conveys very strong feelings, impressions and sensations to the audience and radiates so much energy that it propels one to their roots, regardless of whether they are familiar with Bruno Schulz’s body of work or not.
