Theodoros Espiritou, The raft of Medusa
Α: I, too, was on Medusa’s raft, but I was thrown out and then I spent days and nights on a crumbling plank
Β: I don’t remember you but that’s not surprising, with all the terror and the confusion Α: I was aboard, ask them
Β: They are in a terrible state, if you mean those who survived Some have lost their memory At first there were many who hanged on to Medusa’s raft but their numbers kept dwindling Some were lost in the waves because the stronger ones kicked them away they thought the raft couldn’t take so many people then there were those who were dying and again the others kicked them into the waves both brain and soul were absent if you ask me whether I was truly aboard the Medusa I cannot say I don’t remember there are whole chapters missing And here you come asking amidst all that incredible confusion
Α: I got hold of a rope hanging off Medusa’s raft and when I got close someone kicked me go away, he said, go, he screamed, there is no room
Β: I don’t remember you on board but you look strangely familiar
As if I knew you once
